Om man under en jagt i Afrika i sidste ende kan lægge hånden på et sæt snoede kuduhorn er mere end noget andet et spørgsmål om rent held

En skygge af en velvoksen kudutyr kiggede dovent efter os, mens firehjulstrækkeren sled sig op ad klippernes humpede stier.
Vi standsede bilen og betragtede den kratsøgende antilope, som for et kort øjeblik var helt uden bevoksning fra top til tå. Tilsyneladende var den dus med bilen og strakte sig blot efter akaciebuskens grønne skud, så de lange horn kradsede den på ryggen.
I buskadset kunne vi se omridset af endnu en tyr. Den virkede større, og jeg forsøgte at få et glimt af dens horn. Men de forblev gemt i skygger og tæt bevoksning.
Det eneste, vi kunne se, var den dybe og tunge krop, der langsomt trak bort. En krop, der med rette kunne bære betegnelsen: en tyr.
Den store tyrs retræte gjorde makkertyren ængstelig, og da den satte fokus på bilen, åbenbarede den sig i al sin skønhed. Hvide striber flød som blod ned ad de blågrå flanker, og både strube og ryglinje var dekoreret med lange hår, der sad, som var de friseret og klippet med en saks.
William Taylor, professionel jæger og min vært de kommende dage, studerede tyren, mens jeg forsøgte at få et par billeder til varigt minde.
– Minimum 55 tommer, hviskede han, da han atter sænkede kikkerten.
