Ny dokumentarfilm af Tom Opre sætter fokus på brug af det skotske højland til lagring af CO2 og øget biodiversitet. Nye anvendelsesformål, der nogle steder har været på bekostning af den lokale livsstil med jagt og forvaltning af ikke mindst det store hjortevildt …

Især kronvildt, der af mange regnes som symbol på skotsk turisme og dertil et levebrød for højlandssamfundet i århundreder, betragtes nu af flere NGO’er og politikere som en miljømæssig udfordring.
En holding, der har ført til forsøg på lokal udryddelse og mangel på overordnet forvaltningsmål for bestanden, da kronvildtet kan konflikte med f.eks. skovrejsning og etablering af klimaskov.
I debatten om højlandets fremtid indgår også spørgsmålet om store rovdyr, som f.eks. ulv, der p.t. ikke findes frittende i Storbritanien.
Filmen The Last Keeper har præmiere den 25. april og skal ses som en efterfølger til den anmelderroste Killing the sherherd
